Baby’s First Signs

I am a Florida State certified teacher with a Masters in Deaf Education. I have been signing for 14 years and for 10 of those years I taught deaf and hard of hearing students. I teach ASL classes at Broward College and I am a certified Sign2me presenter. I am a stay at home mom of a 4 year old boy and a 2 year old baby girl who have too many signs to count.

Mondays September 14 - October 26 (No class October 12-Columbus Day) Level 1 9:00-9:45 and 10:00-10:45
Mondays November 2 - December 14 (No Class November 30) Time: TBA

My schedule is very flexible and maybe altered to meet your needs. Call or email me to let me know what works best for you!

Will resume in September
Held once a month for 2 hours at a local park, my informal playgroups will introduce you to the benefits of signing with your infant. Time will be spent learning a few frequently used signs, getting comfortable with this new mode of communication and having your basic questions about signing answered. You will leave this playgroup with a better understanding of the benefits of signing with your infant and how to get started on your own.

In-home Instruction
If you have two or more friends who are also interested, you can host classes in your home or mine. Ideal for stay-at-home parents or caregivers who prefer to learn with their infants in a comfortable environment. Classes are held once a week for six consecutive weeks and are 30-45 minutes in length. There are two levels; Level 1 for basic signs, Level 2 more complex, abstract signs for when your baby matures. You do not have to commit to do both levels. You will learn everything you need to know to communicate effectively with your infant using American Sign Language. A very minimum of 100 new ASL signs will be introduced in each level. Hosts are responsible for inviting at least two other families. Infants are welcome.

Private In-home Instruction
You will learn the same as the in-home instruction but in the privacy of your own home, one-on-one, with or without children present. It will be set up to work best for you and your schedule.

Michelle Higdon

I have been dabbling in signing with my baby for a few months. I got two books, but was not making much headway. Taking Michelle Higdon’s Babies First Signs class, with my baby gave us tons of fun hands on experience. It helped tremendously to see the signs presented in person, rather in a book or on video. We learned the history of some of the signs, methods to practice and important tips for success. This class has made a huge difference, for us, from the very first session and I am proud to say my baby is expressing some of her basic needs in sign.
-Annie Garber, mother of a 14 month old

It was so much easier to learn the signs in class. And so much more fun. The songs, the repetition and practice made it a snap to learn signs that I had been struggling with for months on my own.
-Ginger Gardiner, mother of 11-month old Isabel

My son has been slow to speak, and his being able to communicate is a lifesaver! With his sixty sign vocabulary, he talks to me all day long. Tantrums are rare because he doesn’t have the frustration of not being able to communicate. I’d recommend this class to any parent.
-Lori Colan, M.D. Pediatrician, mother of 18-month old Maxwell

My son is talking up a storm, and signing so much too. I am so amazed at how far he has come. I can’t thank you enough for offering and teaching the baby sign class. We really got so much out of it, and the pleasure of knowing you and your son is a terrific bonus. I have boasted about your class to all I have come in contact with, and have passed your phone # and email to many. I don’t know if anyone has contacted you, but just know, that I definitely spread the word. My son is now 18 months, and learns new signs almost daily. What a wonderful way to communicate with hardly any whining!!!

I just wanted to say I’m so glad I took your courses. Johnny Thunder just turned 14 months old, and has 18 signs he uses regularly now, including "Toilet" which he used for the first time this morning while he was pooping! Potty training, here we come! It’s really just amazing to see him observe animals, things and people and sign to me about them. Because we took your courses, he has the ability to communicate, how amazing!
