Meet Debbie.
With her quick hand salute-like sign for Hello, a huge welcoming smile and her lively enthusiasm, Debbie can stir up a crowd! When you have her teach you ASL signs, one can t help get into the action, sign along, and burst into full laughter with her jokes when hand signs get mixed up.

Debbie Lawrence, founder of Signs of Baby, has 28 years experience in teaching Sign Language that could be used for both hearing and non-hearing individuals. Her personal experience piqued her passion and interest in studying more about Sign Language. Since 1978, she took more courses in American Sign Language (ASL) to further develop her Sign Language skills. She served as a volunteer at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf Adult Literacy Program before she moved to Minnesota. In 2000, she received her BA degree in Deaf Culture Studies from North Central University in Minneapolis, MN. Then in 2003, she became a SIGN2ME Network Presenter in which she based her instructions from Dr. Joseph Garcia s Infant Signing pioneering research studies. Dr. Garcia found that hearing babies who could engage in expressive communication using ASL signs accelerated in their verbal language.

Her recent accomplishments include being featured on KARE 11 NEWS, her appointment as ASL Trainer for The Program for Infant Toddler Caregivers granted by the MN Child Care Resources & Referral Network (MNCCRRN) and certification as Minnesotas Trainer of Modules II and III from The Program for Infant Toddler Caregivers. She was also invited to speak at the MENSA conference, an organization with members whose IQ is in the top 2% of the population.

Debbie Lawrence has been presenting as an American Sign Language (ASL) training instructor for professional care providers, childcare educators, librarians, nannies, parents, and family caregivers. She is a frequent presenter in community centers, daycare centers and at educational workshops such as the Early Childhood Development and Brain Development Conferences. She is an active trainer for several childcare organizations such as MN Child Care Resources & Referral Network, Child Care Choices, ARC Midstate and the Resource for Child Caring.

With an interest in cross-cultural studies of Deaf communities, she has traveled extensively to Denmark, England, Kenya, Zambia and Haiti. Since her return from visiting these countries, she is in the process of editing her TV documentary materials on Kenya Sign Language and Kenya Deaf Culture. With her clients who have various diagnoses of Developmental Disabilities, she recently produced a TV Game Show with them, entitled, The Big Z Sign Language Game! It aired on North Metro Cable 15 in Blaine, MN.
