Bridging the Gap to Communication

Bridging the Gap to Communication
All parents and caregivers know the feeling when you just cannot figure out what your infant or toddler wants. Now imagine opening the doors of communication through sign language. You can now understand if your child is hungry, hurt or wants his/her favorite toy.

Research has proven that children exposed to American Sign Language have reduced frustration and actually have a larger spoken vocabulary when they do begin to speak. It also helps to create a bond between child and parent in their ability to communicate at an earlier age.

Presenter Profile
Michelle Plotnick is a practicing speech-language pathologist working with children birth-21 years in an outpatient hospital setting. Previously, she has worked in a school for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children that uses American Sign Language as its primary language. Additionally, Michelle has experience working in Early Intervention. These experiences combined provide a wealth of knowledge and understanding of not only child development, but the important role sign language can take in a familys life to help "bridge the gap of communication." Sign language is a key factor in not only a Deaf childs life, but a typically developing infant who is not yet speaking or a child that is living with a communication disorder. Sign language also provides English speaking children with a foundation in a second language that opens the door to a world of communication.
