About Presenter & Keiki Signs
Aloha (Hello) and mahalo (Thank You) for visiting Keiki Signs home page at My name is Flo and the little boy you see with me is my son Cole. I started Keiki Signs because I felt that all parents and caregivers should have access to this amazing tool. Seriously when I say you can communicate with your child before they can speak you can. Not only is this a great tool for communicating with your child but also it is a great way to communicate with someone who has lost his or her speech or hearing. American Sign Language (ASL) empowers every child or adult who uses it to communicate to others. Just watch the difference it makes and watch their faces light up when they feel they are being understood.

In the past 15 years I have worked as a Certified Nurses Aid & Certified Restorative Nurses Aid with adults, elderly and children. I have also worked setting up programs and maintaining them on military installations. I have been a camp counselor, swim instructor, American Red Cross computer instructor (MAC/PC), home visitor counselor and Day care provider. My experience also included owning and running a Family Day Care (Hawaii Nei Keiki Center).

I have taken ASL classes as a second language at San Diego City College. In 1996 I was fortunate to meet a lady who talked about Baby Sign Language and how she was so amazed at the results it had on both the caregiver and the child.

In 2000, I decided to open a Family Day Care to finish college. I had a child who was autistic, the Doctors, the family and assistants were all using ASL to help him communicate. It was great, after he learned the basic signs his tantrums reduced drastically. By signing he was able to tell us what he needed.

In 2002 my husbands sister had a child, her day care was teaching her how to use ASL to help her communication skills and to help reduce frustrations. It was just wonderful to see that she could communicate with her mom, dad and to us what she wanted. She is now 2 1/2 and her verbal vocabulary, in my opinion, far surpasses some of the three year olds that I have worked with.

With all my exposure I knew I was going to use ASL with my child whenever that was going to be. Sure enough in December of 2004, I had my first son Cole. I wanted to stay home with him so I decided to reopen Hawaii Nei Kieki Center in the Makakilo/Kapolei area. After three months of staying home I really felt the need to get back to making a difference in peoples lives. My previous job had been for Hana Like Healthy Start Program. Hana Like is a non-profit program, which helps prevent child abuse & neglect.

We made visits to our clients homes and supplied them the tools to help their children reach the normal developmental milestones. This was done using activities to strengthen the bond between the parent/caregiver and children. As time went on their relationships grew stronger and the frustrations and tantrums diminished. My belief is if you have a strong bond between yourself and your children, through communication/understanding you will do what ever it takes to love, nourish and keep them safe. You do this so that your child can have a healthy start in life.

That is what Baby Sign Language is all about, giving the parents or caregivers the tool of communication to create that strong bond. For this is the reason it is now my goal to teach everyone Baby Sign Language. If I can help families reduce the frustration of communicating then I feel that I am still doing my part in fighting child abuse and neglect in the State of Hawaii.

I started ASL with my son at 3 months, he recognized the sign for milk at 5 months. He is now 9 months and has signed: Milk, More, and Eat. Today 10/2/05 while at Home Depot he looked up in the parking lot at a passing jet and made the sign for airplane. I praised Cole and acted like no big deal, but inside I was jumping up and down doing flips, and kept saying airplane so he would do it again and again. My husband was laughing. We taught him this sign two weeks ago. I am really excited that all our hard work is starting to pay off.

UPDATE 2008:
Our new born Kirra is not so new born anymore but 5 month old Kirra knows the sign for milk. We started with her at 3 month like cole and currently she recognizes the sign for milk. She stops crying when we sign milk or she gets all excited as if she sees the milk bottle and opens her mouth. Will update more as she grows older.
