SIGNING: CRADLE TO CLASSROOM

SIGN LANGUAGE AND EARLY COMMUNICATION
For many parents, the emergence of their baby¡¦s first words is a much-anticipated event. Of course, communication has really been occurring long before those first words through their baby¡¦s gestures: pointing, holding out their arms to be picked up, or taking a caregiver¡¦s hand to move some toy.

Gestures come first because a baby¡¦s motor development supercedes the ability to produce the fine small muscle movements of speech. Given this sequence of development, it¡¦s natural to present babies with sign language.

Researchers have shown that using sign language with babies:
 reduces frustration for caregivers and babies
 strengthens the bond between babies and caregivers
 may accelerate verbal language development
 may increase interest in books and assist literacy skills
 does not delay verbal language development

INFANT/TODDLER PROGRAMS
I offer two workshops based on Joseph Garcia¡¦s Sign with your Baby™ Program, which uses American Sign Language (ASL). My Introductory and Follow-up Workshops, both 1 1/2 ¡V2 hours in length, are designed to give parents and caregivers an introduction and a jump-start on early language communication with their babies. The goal of the workshop is to allow participants to feel competent to establish a sign communication system with their babies.

Workshops are designed for anyone who has regular contact with a pre-verbal infant: parents, grandparents, expectant parents, parents involved in international adoptions, and childcare professionals all benefit from attending a workshop.

WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES
Introductory Workshop

Participants can expect to:
 review research on the benefits of signing
 practice modeling first signs
 discover how to create optimal learning opportunities for their babies
Demonstration, discussion, preview demonstration videotape, and games and songs will be used to enhance participant learning. Parents and caregivers do not have to learn a new language ¡V instead, they will be shown how to add signs to their speech within their daily routines.

Follow-up Workshops

Participants can expect to:
 learn vocabulary related to areas of interest to babies and toddlers
 topic such as food, animals, and alphabet and numbers
 using sign language during book-reading

Parents can host a workshop in their home for a small group of other parents and caregivers. The ¡§host¡¨ parents would then attend the workshop at no cost.
Interested groups, such as, family child-care providers, center-based childcare, community centers, and mothers¡¦ groups, may also sponsor classes. Classes could be held in a variety of class formats ( e.g., 4-week, 6-week, etc.)
