Loving Signs
Why Wait to Communicate?

Helpful Information
It is the goal of Loving Signs to give parents, educators, and childcare givers the tools necessary to teach infants and children to communicate through American Sign Language (ASL).

ASL is the third most popular language in the United States. There are many benefits of teaching pre-verbal hearing infants to communicate through the use of sign. The first is reduced stress levels for both the child and the caregiver. When a child is able to communicate their needs, they are less frustrated and more satisfied. Second, the use of signs can reduce noise levels and improve integration among diverse populations in childcare facilities. Third, sign language can reduce aggressive behavior and accelerate the development of verbal language.

Presenter Profile
Melissa is a member of the Sign with your Baby Presenter’s Network and the mother of a signing child.

I have loved teaching from an early age. I began teaching swimming lessons at age 15 and continued teaching various things until most recently teaching fifth grade. I have a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. My degree training included completeing an ASL class and student teaching in a classroom that included 2 deaf children.

After becoming a mother in the Spring of 2004, I began staying home with my daughter. When she was 14 months old, I began teaching her ASL (I only wish I had started much sooner!). I was amazed at how quickly she caught on and how much easier it was for her to communicate her needs to me. Her first signs were milk, more and eat. Any parent knows that when a child can tell you they need those things, potential melt-downs can be avoided.
