Below is a list of the classes I teach.

Communicating with Hearing Babies Using American Sign Language: Have you been frustrated not knowing why your baby is crying? You don't know what your baby needs because he/she can't verbally tell you they are hungry, thirsty, need a diaper change or even hurt. Research as shown hearing babies as young as eight months old can use American Sign Language to communicate wants, needs and feelings long before vocal skills mature. Research has shown that babies who sign are less frustrated, more content, understand more words, have larger vocabularies, a unique bond with parents, siblings and other caregivers. Classes are based on Dr. Joseph Garcia's Sign with your Baby® program. Who would benefit from these classes?: expectant parents, new parents, caregivers, grandparents, families and children with special needs, and parents of newly identified deaf/hard of hearing children. Signs (80-100) such as eat, more and milk will be taught by modeling, songs, games and signed stories by Roger the Reindeer! Come join this fun and exciting way to communicate with you infant or toddler.

A. Signing with Baby and Me: Baby & one or two adults who interact with the baby.

B. Signing with Baby: Adult Only Class: This class is for those adults who feel more comfortable without the baby in class.

C. 3-Hour Signing with Baby Workshop: A class designed for those who are unable to commit to a weekly class but still want to learn how to communicate with their child using ASL.

D. American Sign Language for Beginners: It's never too late to learn a second language. American Sign Language is the third most used language in the United States. ASL uses movements of the hands and facial expressions, as English uses sound. ASL signs are made with a specific handshape, palm orientation, location and movement, when one of these changes so does the meaning of the sign. Come learn ASL, its history, Deaf culture and proper syntax. I will also be using signing games, songs and stories to help you remember the signs. The text book for the class will be "A Basic Course in American Sign Language" by Tom Humphries, C. Padden & T. O'Rourke. Spiral bound 2nd Edition ISBN #0-932666-42-6. Cost for the text book is $ 37.05 (includes PA state sales tax). E-mail Deborah Topper to reserve your copy, SigningwithDebT@aol.com. You may also purchase the text yourself through Dawn Sign Press at www.dawnsignpress.com or www.amazon.com.

New: American Sign Language Intermediate: For those who have completed ASL Beginners or have an equivalent knowledge of ASL. The text book for the class will be continuing with "A Basic Course in American Sign Language" by Tom Humphries, C. Padden & T.

Presenter Profile
Hello, my name is Deb Topper. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have worked as a teacher's aide/asst. for 17 years in special education. In 1998 while working for the Lincoln Intermediate Unit 12 in York County I had the opportunity of working in a hard of hearing/deaf classroom in a high school, with 9th and 10th graders. I bought my first signing book and started teaching myself until I found ASL classes in the area. I took 36 weeks of classes at the Deaf Center. I have also taken college classes in ASL I & II using the Signing Naturally curriculum. I always have one or two ASL books with me where ever I go. I am always learning and practicing ASL. I also had the priviledge of working with a special needs student in kindergarten who was down syndrome and non-verbal. Besides rearing my three children (all adults now) working with this little one has been the most gratifying and wonderful thing I have done. To be able to teach this student how to learn and communicate with others through signing. It was so exciting to see him learn and make a new sign and actually use it in context. We would both get BIG smiles on our faces and sign "Yeeeehhh"!
My love for ASL has brought me to Sign2Me/Northlight Communications so I can continue to teach others ASL through a wonderful program.
