From the Hands of Babes
Describe the courses you offer and the techniques you use to teach them.
I was born in Indiana, and moved about every 2 or 3 years growing up. I lived in Turkey, Maryland, Texas, California, Germany, and then back to Maryland. I began my experience with ASL as a 12 year old. My friend and I had our "secret language" and learned to fingerspell like a pro! In high school, I worked for 2 years as a teachers aid at Maryland School for the Deaf in Kindergarten and 1st Grade. I had a blast working with these little Deaf kids. It was fascinating to watch their tiny fingers fly as they painted their expressions in the air. I was definitely hooked! In college, I worked on translating and performing in 2 main-stage productions for the Theater Department at BYU.
I got married in 2002, and my husband is profoundly deaf. I am a certified interpreter in the state of Utah and active in the Deaf community. I have 2 children who sign like crazy! Ive enjoyed practicing all my teaching techniques on them!
My teaching style: I try to give parents a balanced look at teaching their children to sign. We use ASL fluently in our home, and I am open to teaching ASL as a second language to any parent who wishes, though I focus my classes on simply communicating with babies and toddlers with the intent that signing is a step in communication. In my class, we discuss how language is learned, the benefits of teaching sign, and basic principles of ASL so that parents feel comfortable using and producing signs.
