ASL Mom
Giving you the upper hand in family communication.

As a Sign Language interpreter I had made the decision to teach my child to sign long before she was born. I would sign â??I love youâ?? on my belly so she could feel it. When she was born I held her close and took a first look at those perfect little fingersâ?¦ signing â??I love youâ?? back.

Working with families in the Deaf community I found that communicating with your child really starts the second they are born. We want to give our children the best. As parents we learn our childâ??s body language in an effort to minimize tears and frustration. Wouldnâ??t it be great if they would just tell us what they need? They can! I have seen a two month old baby sign â??milkâ?? and that same child ask to read a book (by signing â??bookâ?? with raised eyebrows) only seven months later. The benefits of signing with your children are immense and the bond between you will only strengthen because of it.

Presenter Profile
A native San Franciscan, I now make my home in the beautiful Redwoods of the San Lorenzo Valley. My fascination with Sign Language began in elementary school and only grew from there. I began my formal training in 1995 at Vista College in Berkeley and after obtaining my certificate in American Sign Language (ASL) I joined an intensive interpreting program, graduating in 2002. I have been RID certified since 2003 and continue to work as a freelance interpreter.

With the birth of my daughter in 2005 Iâ??ve watched a whole new world through her eyes. Having her be the one to tell me about it is just amazing. Words are not able to express how great it feels, but the first time your child signs to you, youâ??ll know.

Course Description
Learn how to enrich your child’s speech and language, increase self-confidence and minimize frustration through the use of American Sign Language (ASL). ASL Mom classes and workshops are a perfect introduction on how to sign with babies and toddlers. Once you know a few core signs we offer assistance in setting your goals, as a family, to determine which signs you feel are important to teach your baby. In addition to teaching you everyday signs that can be easily incorporated into your daily routine we will discuss supporting research, helpful tools and techniques of teaching your child, and the many benefits of using ASL with your pre-verbal infants and children.

Classes and workshops can be taken by parents, daycare providers, playgroups, preschool teachers, babysitters and other interested parties.

Classes

ASL Baby This 5-week-class provides an introduction of basic signs needed to communicate with your baby. Weekly topics include: family, foods, health and assistance vocabulary. Classes are ideal for parents of babies and young children who want to introduce signs to their family. Take home materials include the â??Sign with your Baby®â?? book or the complete learning kit.

ASL Toddler This 5-week-class is for those who have completed ASL Baby, or with instructor permission. Play with your toddler and learn more signs to communicate with them about their growing world. Each class focuses on a different topic, including: animals, playtime, nature, emotions, etc. These classes also show how to incorporate books, and music to help reinforce the vocabulary taught in class.

Workshops
This is an introduction of the benefits of signing with young children and how to begin. The number of signs taught is dependant upon your goals and the length of the workshop. Workshops include an information pack as well as one â??Sign with your Baby®â?? complete learning kit (DVD, book, and quick reference chart). Workshops are ideal for preschools, daycares, motherâ??s clubs, and parent education groups.

Workshops - 1 to 3 hours in length, can be presented at your location. Please contact me to make arrangements that suit your needs.

Private Lessons

To best meet the demands of todayâ??s hectic scheduling, I am currently taking registrations for private lessons. You may set it up to follow the same 5-week style sessions or a more condensed workshop format. If you would like to take the class with friends, that can also be arranged. Please contact me for more details.
