Presenter Profile-Shannon Osborne
We began using Sign Language with our hearing son, Eli, when he was 9 months old using Joseph Garcias Sign with your Baby program. By his first birthday Eli could tell us whether he was hungry, thirsty, cold, tired or needed a diaper change, without crying or fussing - but by using Signs! We continued to learn and use American Sign Language with Eli even after he began to speak and by the time he turned 3 years old Eli could sign over 300 Signs and fingerspell the alphabet. Eli appears in the "Signing Time" video series, Volumes 4, 5 and 6!
I began teaching Wee Can Sign classes in 1999 as a volunteer for Family to Family Connection, a non-profit organization which offers parenting classes and support for new parents in Nevada. Having taught hundreds of families how to effectively communicate with preverbal babies has been a very rewarding experience for me. We have witnessed preverbal, crawling babies communicate with each other in our classes.
Ive Presented my Wee Can Sign programs at the Annual Nevada Early Childhood Conferences in 2003, 2006 and 2008, held by the Nevada Association for the Education of Young Children and at the North American Craniofacial Family Conferences for the last 4 years. Ive done trainings for Clark County School District Staff Development Days, for the Clark County Young Peoples Library Summit and The Henderson Library Early Literacy Parent Sessions. I've implemented Sign Language programs for the Nellis Air Force Base Child Development Centers, Lone Mountain Creative Learning Center and Lit'l Scholar Academy, as well as Child Care Trainings at the University of Nevada Reno Cooperative Extension. Wee Can Sign and Sign & Sign Classes have been approved by the Nevada Registry for Training Hours for Child Care Providers
