Smart Hands with Melissa
Currently doing level 1 class only.
These classes run in 8 week sessions (one class a week). In each session you will learn over 100 signs to use with your child. Classes are 45 minutes in length and are created for parents/ caregivers and babies. In a playful, educational and language-rich environment, caregivers and children will build their American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary through instruction, interactive games and songs. You will learn recommended first signs; we will discuss the benefits of using ASL with infants and demonstrate easy techniques for successfully integrating signs into everyday life. Some of the ASL vocabulary covered for this age group includes: everyday words, family, food, animals, emotions, opposites, bed time and play signs. (Level 2 class will follow)
Melissa’s interest in ASL is a product of her lifelong interest in communication. After receiving her associates at BYU-Idaho she transferred to California State University, Fresno. It was during this time that she was able to see sign language put to use in the classroom. She became intrigued with how language developed in these children, some of whom had never heard a word in their lives. Melissa received her Bachelor’s Degree in Deaf Education in May of 2006 from California State University, Fresno. She plans to continue her education and obtain her credential in Early intervention for deaf children.
Melissa and her husband were blessed with a beautiful son on September 6, 2006. She began signing with him and has been able to see first hand the many benefits signing with her baby offers. She has decided that she wants to present other families a window into the minds of their little ones before they can verbally speak. So she sought out an ASL based program and became a Sign2me certified instructor.
Melissa’s background in education and creative learning makes her classes exciting and fun. She believes that reinforcement is vital; her classes include music and dance as well as a variety of activities in order for children to gain as much exposure to various signs as possible. Melissa’s hope is to give children the best start possible so they will be able to achieve their highest potential in life.
