Presenter Profile
My love of sign language began as a child. I took an after school class and learned the basics of American Sign Language. From then on, I was always interested in the language. While in college, I was exploring education-related fields and became interested in deaf education. I took some beginning courses: audiology, deaf studies, and my first sign class. I was immediately hooked. I took all four American Sign Language courses and changed my major to deaf education. I went on to earn my Bachelors of Education in Intervention Specialist: Deaf Education. After college, I taught special education in Akron before moving to Las Vegas to teach deaf education. I then spent the next five years in Las Vegas, teaching students with diverse needs. I absolutely loved working with these children and their families. I saw first hand how sign language changed their lives. Many of my students had multiple disabilities and were struggling to communicate. Sign language was the answer for so many. During this time, I heard that sign language was also catching on with mothers of typically developing children. When my friends and family started having children I read up on “baby sign” and started recommending my favorite resource, Sign with Your Baby by Joseph Garcia. I have watched my nephew and others benefit from this ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with those around them. It has eliminated much of the frustration normally exhibited by little ones and eased the minds of their parents knowing that they understand their child’s wants and needs. I continue to work with parents and students with diverse needs. I am living and working back in Ohio and couldn’t be happier. I am teaching deaf education for the Educational Service Center of Franklin County in the Upper Arlington School District. I am excited to share sign language with others and their families.
