Helping babies sign before they can speak

Course Description
Many times we can sense what our baby needs. But what about those times when we are clueless and feel helpless? What if there were a way to understand why our baby is fussing before he or she could talk? Think of the spared frustration for both of you! Using signs is the perfect way to achieve early communication, grow closer to your child and get him or her excited about communicating and, eventually, talking!

PRESENTATIONS are 1 hour in length and go over the very basics of the Signing with your Baby program. This is a jump start or an introduction to further delving into the journey of signing in your family. Signing with your Baby materials will be available for purchase.

WORKSHOPS are 2-3 hours long. We’ll begin with the basics of signing with your baby and move on to specific signs for your baby’s daily life, including meal time signs, relationship signs, animals and more. There will plenty of time for practice, fun interaction and questions. Workshops can be modified for private in-home sessions.
In addition to both parents attending, consider inviting a grandparent, daycare provider or other special adult in the child’s life.

CLASSES run from 2-5 weeks are approximately an hour long each. We start with an introduction to signing and each successive class builds on the previous, focusing on an aspect of baby’s daily life and interactions: food, relationships, animals, diapering, motivations and more. Classes can be tailored to fit the specific needs of the host and participating families. Hosts receive discounted fees! Classes can be modified for community offerings, as well.
In addition to both parents attending, consider inviting a grandparent, daycare provider or other special adult in the child’s life.

SING & SIGN STORYTIME is a fun community offering for babies and older children (as well as their parents). With puppets, books, music and more, the children are engaged and actively participate in the storytime, all the while learning lots of signs and even some ABCs!

PLAYGROUPS are every other month and designed for those with signing experience who have at least taken a Sign2Speak one-hour presentation at any location. They are held at Body, Mind & Spirit and use music, both live and recorded, rhyming, fingerplays, movement and more! See the schedule for details.

CHILDCARE AND PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS give your staff (or your child’s day care provider) an edge. Workshops can teach staff how to more easily communicate with children in order to reduce noise and frustration levels, reduce stress and biting, improve future literacy and more! See the childcare page for details.

Presenter Profile
Amylee with Zia, her oldest and inspiration for signing with infants and toddlers.
My name is Amylee Udell and I signed with my oldest daughters and look forward to signing with my third child very soon. Interested in ASL since childhood, I fell into signing with my family and found it to be so very rewarding. I also found it to be a source of curiosity and interest for those who saw us communicating this way. I became and advocate of signing with babies, telling everyone who would listen about the benefits.

Teaching this new passion was a natural extension of that. A former organizer of youth and retreat programs, I am now actively involved in the parenting community in Albuquerque, teaching signing and other classes, taking ASL classes to improve my own knowledge and skills and building communities with other families through various avenues. Sign2Speak grew from these endeavors!
