Hands-On Learning
Sign Language Classes & Workshops by Corrine

Course Description
Hands-On Learning offers the following educational opportunities throughout Newton and the surrounding area:

Presentations - Presentations are an introduction to Hands-On Learning, Sign2Me and the benefit of signing with children. Participants will review materials, ask question and see some of the latest research on the use of signing with infants, children, and toddlers. Participants can sign up for future workshops or classes, and purchase materials. Cost: The cost is minimal, though will very depending on location and site.

Hands-On Learning Workshop - For those who want more time to savor the moments try the "Hands-On" Workshop. Cost: per person or per couple.

Fast Track Workshop – For the quick learner. Held bi-monthly for 2 hours, Hands-On Learning workshops will introduce you to the benefits of signing with your infant. Adequate time will be spent learning frequently-used signs and getting comfortable with this new mode of communication. You will leave this workshop with a better understanding of the benefits of signing with your infant and how to get started on your own. Participants will leave with a minimum of 50 new ASL signs to use with their infants. (Infants welcome to attend) Cost: per person or per couple. A limited number of SIGN with your BABYÔ kits and products will be available at the event. To assure you’re not left out, e-mail or call to pre-order your kit. Kits are strongly recommended, but not required.

In-home Instruction – If you have three or more friends who are also interested in classes, you can host classes in your home. These classes are great for stay-at-home parents/care givers who prefer to learn with their infants in their own space. Classes are held once a week for five consecutive weeks and are one hour in length. You will learn everything you need to know in communicating effectively with your infant using Sign Language. A minimum of 100 new ASL signs will be introduced over the course of five-weeks. (Hosts are responsible for inviting up to three other families. Infants are welcome.) Cost: for one adult and one child - second adult is free. SIGN with your BABYÔ kits and products can be purchased at your first session.

Sing and Sign Lessons - Sing and Sign lessons are recommended for the pre-school child and their families. Sing and Sign lessons are generally once a week for four consecutive weeks, and are 30 minutes in length. Curriculum is based on the “Sign2Me Pick Me Up! Music CD and Activity Guide.” A minimum of 50 signs will be introduced over the course of four weeks. Cost: The cost for the entire four-week instruction varies depending on the class location. The “Pick Me Up! Music CD and Activity Guide” may be purchased at the first lesson.

Child Care Provider/Day Care Training – Your staff build the agenda! Contact presenter for more information.

*All presentations/workshops outside of the Newton area may have a traveling fee, please contact the presenter for details.

Presenter Profile
I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Emporia State University with a Cognate in Rehabilitation Counseling. ESU was where I first learned I had a passion for Sign Language as I took classes in American Sign Language. Because of my love for Sign, I decided to complete the Educational Interpreter Certification Program in Signing Exact English from Wichita State University. I am an Independent Case Manager supporting persons with Mental Retardation/Developmental Delays. My job has required me to communicate through Sign Language. My experiences includes signing with persons from infancy to adulthood. I am currently working on my Master’s in Social Work.
